a meme...

Okay. I'm not entirely sure what a meme is, but Scarlettah tagged me for one so I assume that means that I just fill this out and curse another five people with the same task. I could be interesting, it could be embarrassing. So bear with me. I will post about real life things again when I get the chance. For now, enjoy!

My currently reading list:
"The Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver
"Righteous Sinners" by Ron Julian
"Fear and Trembling and the Sickness Unto Death" (both in one volume) by Soren Kierkegaard
"Diary of an Old Soul"
Webster's German-English Dictionary

Total number of books in my library:
No clue, but if Scarlettah and Marianne both estimate 200 I guess I'm close to that as well because I rank close to them on the book collecting geek scale.

Last book finished:
I was dreading this question: The DaVinci Code (I hadn't read it yet). But the one before was Nicholas Nickleby.

Last book bought:
I think it was "Birthday Stories" by Haruki Murakami

5 Meaningful books: (Bible aside)
"The Road Less Traveled" by M. Scott Peck
"Practice in Christianity" by Soren Kierkegaard
"Plato's Dialogues" by Plato
"Righteous Sinners" by Ron Julian
The Dictionary

5 Favorite Books:
"David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens
"Concluding Unscientific Postscripts" by Soren Kierkegaard
"The Wise Woman" a collection of short stories by George MacDonald
"Till We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis
"Seven Daughters and Seven Sons" by Barbara Cohen and Bahija Lovejoy

5 others to tag:
Camille
Matt
Jem
Josh
Jim and Amy
It says to just tag five people, but I would honestly be interested in hearing what you are reading so leave me a comment.

First, my undestanding of what a meme is: a piece of information that travels quickly and becomes meaningless due to its overuse. An example of this is the word "patriotism" or "freedom". This word is a catchword used by the media and politicians so much that it elicits only an emotional response instead of having any definite meaning.
This is how it was used in a class at PSU a few years ago. It probably has some other, perhaps more original, meaning.

Current Reading List:
Collected Fictions, Jorge Luis Borges
The Gold of the Tigers - Selected Later Poems, Borges
No one Belongs Here more than You, Miranda July
Descartes' Dream and other Essays, Jacques Maritain
Introduction to Phenomenology, Robert Sokolowski
A Spanish Reader for Beginners

Number of Books: Who knows! I'm not counting them all! I counted 50 of them and then compared the shelf space they took up with my total shelf space and I'm going to guess that the total number is around 450.

Last Book Finished: Discourse on Method, Descartes

Last Book Bought: a collection of Flannery O'Connor's 2 novels with A Good Man is Hard to Find stories

Five Meaningful Books:
Plato's Dialogues
Fear and Trembling, Kierkegaard
The Challenge of Jesus etc., N.T. Wright
The Closing of the American Mind, Allan Bloom
Lilith, George MacDonald

Five Favories:
(I hate having to choose "favorites" lists)
SO Bleh!

Five other to Eat:
I don't eat people!

Sorry this is kind of messy and not pretty....I'm posting now, though, 'cause otherwise it will never get up!

last book purchased: evocative objects: things we think with, ed. by Sherry Turkle

last book finished: the curious incident of the dog in the night-time by mark haddon

reading list/(currently reading):
first circle, (soltzenytsyn)
anna karennina (tolstoy)
paradiso (boring! i've been trying to finish this for years....) (dante)
evocative objects (turkle)

# of books owned:
170-ish in eugene (not counting all the books i have posted on paperbackswap.com, which would probably bring it to about 190) not counting several boxes of text and math books, plus a couple of shelves worth of books at home....so... probably closer to 250 or 300.

favorites: (5/many)
beowulf
pride and prejudice, austen
the gift of pain, dr. brand
my freedom and my bondage, frederick douglass
algebra, artin (favorite math book, at least...)
hidden kitchens

5 influential books (bible aside):
mmm...
the gift of pain
screwtape letters
gulag archipeligo
(i'm sure there are more, I just can't think of them at the moment!)

I find it amusing that my list is heavy on the fiction, whereas most others i've seen on this meme (from gute/reformation folks) have been heavy on the philosophy.
